B2: Beauty from the Beast: Breathing New Life into Old Building Stock

Tuesday, June 17 | 1:45 PM - 2:45 PM

This program has been submitted (but not yet approved) for Continuing Education for 1.0 total clock hours from NAB/NCERS.

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by AXIS Medical Education and LeadingAge NJ/DE.  AXIS Medical Education is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Many Life Plan Communities are challenged with what to do with campus building stock that is outdated, worn out, and in some cases, sitting vacant. This session will focus on how to turn beastly buildings into beautiful and vibrant spaces. We will explore strategies to transform old building stock to meet consumer expectations, support current program and staffing needs and ultimately foster financial viability. Case study overviews of senior living spaces in Delaware, New Jersey, and beyond will be provided by a LeadingAge NJ/DE provider and architect. We will illustrate the means and methods to renovate old building stock and outdoor spaces when replacement is not the best option. We will also explore a range of renovation scenarios–from interior refreshes to complete transformations and repurposing. Topics to be covered include how to analyze the value of an existing structure, how to determine the cost differences between new construction and renovation and construction phasing impacts on both schedule and cost. A toolkit of design ideas and real-life reinvention examples will be shared so attendees can consider opportunities to transform their outdated beasts into contemporary beauties.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand decision-making considerations when evaluating older building stock
  2. Determine the cost differences between new construction and renovation
  3. Develop knowledge of how to phase complex construction of existing building stock, especially in an occupied setting
