Our society is linguistically diverse at every age and stage. Attention to this growing phenomenon is essential to maintain a healthy, striving community. In this relevant and interactive session, we will shed some light on the LeadingAge population of multilingual learners. We will hear from this unique population and understand from their viewpoint the need to be culturally responsive. By engaging with the lived experiences and linguistic insights of seniors from multilingual backgrounds, professionals can uncover valuable perspectives that enhance inclusivity, trust, and effectiveness in their roles. This interactive session will explore the intricacies of language acquisition, and expound on what it means to know a language. Participants will understand how actively listening to multilingual elders can lead to transformative improvements in care practices, communication, and outcomes across aging services. Through case studies, group discussions, and role-playing exercises, participants will learn practical strategies for creating authentic conversations with multilingual elders. These strategies empower professionals to break down language and cultural barriers, foster mutual respect, and elevate the quality of care.
