F3: Preparing Your Board for Growth
Thursday, June 18, | 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM
Target Audience: Finance; Governance & Leadership
Many not-for-profit organizations are looking for ways to meet the needs of a growing population of seniors, and with this comes the prospect of significant change for the organization and the board that governs it. The topic of growth abounds – whether it’s an expansion of services, of footprint, of the customer served, or other growth strategies, preparing the board for the journey is imperative to preventing false starts and mixed messages about intent. For many leaders armed with a strategic plan that says grow, they face uncertainty from the board on how to grow, the capacity for growth, the impact on the mission, and ultimately the decision-making process needed to guide growth. In this session, participants will learn about the critical success factors in creating and maintaining board discussions to guide the growth process, from the initial strategic discussions to the ongoing work of keeping the board engaged and informed. The development of tools to aid in decision-making and the importance of board process in decision-making will be a particular focus. Content will include: the role of developing a growth strategy and maintaining momentum throughout the year; developing generative discussions to advance strategic thought and utilize board member skillsets; the use of committees to advance work and broader decision-making and ensuring that new and existing board members understand the rationale for growth and progress towards achieving it. Case studies and examples from large and small senior living organizations across the US will provide practical insight that attendees can use to ensure the continued success of their organization and a productive relationship with their board.
